Wives

Magic in the Maize is a topic much discussed. Its particulars are screwier than they are in some other realms, but the agreed upon term for those who study it are the Wise. This is why wisdom is typically used to refer to knowledge of the arcane, over other subjects. Wise should not, however, be confused for the most common practitioners of magic in the Maize, Wives. The act of marriage has granted them the potential for a great deal of magical power, and while this was for a time believed to be exclusive to married women, the existence of the malewife has proven this to be false.

Spellcasting
You love your spouse to the point of innovation, to the point of creation, to the point of spontaneously developing magical ability. What? You only married that person for the cool spells? Is that not its own form of love? Regardless, your marriage is key to why you have magic, but the form your magic takes is bound to you. Your spells will all have a common thread, a theme, if you will, that you choose at level one. Your magic could specialize in anything, from healing to telekinesis, from lightning to frogs. What this does mean, however, is that unless you choose something that happens to have been done before, your MC will have to customize a spell list just for you. This means being patient with them, and willing to roll with the punches in terms of what they give you.

Spellcasting Ability
Imagination is your spellcasting ability for your Wife Spells. Love is a vast thing, and the mind’s ability to explore it is just as vast.
Spell Save DC: 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Imagination modifier
Spell Attack Modifier: your proficiency bonus + your Imagination modifier

Known Spells and all that
You as a Wife are aware of all the things your magic can let you do, but you also understand your limits. As such, each rest, you determine which of your myriad options you’ll employ on this next sojourn into the Maize. From the spell list, select up to your allotted number of spells (of a level you have slots in, of course) to prepare for use until your next rest. And to ensure you’re never truly incapable, you have access to your full rotation of cantrips. Pre-existing examples can be found here.

Spouse
You’re married. Congrats! But just who is your spouse? Do you bring them up often, or are you reserved about your private life? Is your marriage happy, tense, or somewhere in between? There are no wrong answers, but your spouse is an NPC that will have to exist on some level, so this is very much something to talk to your MC about during character creation. The sole real caveat here is that your spouse will be limited to a level equivalent to your character’s. They will also level with you, which you can either choose to handle yourself or leave to your MC if you don’t care for the extra work.

Token of Affection
For some, it’s a photo of their Spouse in a locket. For others, it’s a series of photos in a wallet, joyfully shown to anyone who’ll look. Maybe it’s just your wedding ring, maybe not. But regardless, you now have something that reminds you of your spouse while you’re apart. Once per rest, you can gaze fondly upon this and regain [your level]d3 hit points.

True Love’s Smnorch
At fourth level, your magicks have grown powerful enough that the act of smooching your spouse can break curses placed upon either of you, as well as anyone in the immediate vicinity. Later at eighth level, this can also be used to remove a strike once each in-game week.

Point of Invention
Loving someone to the point of invention is a beautiful thing. At 6th level, work with your MC to create a spell, at least partly inspired by your Spouse. Whether this is something they would enjoy seeing you cast, a spell specifically to help them with something, or simply a magical representation of the way you feel for them, this is your chance to make a mark on the Maize forever. This spell will be added to the Spell List, for anyone applicable to take in the future, and you personally will be able to cast it for free once per rest. Note that this can be as far removed from your own magical specialty as you’d like, so long as it seems fitting.

Oh, I Dabble
You didn’t really think you were locked into one type of magic for eternity, did you? Starting at level 8, each rest, you can swap one of your known spells of level 3 or below for one from a different magical specialty. You may only have one outlier spell at each spell level, but can swap an outlier for a different outlier or back to your original specialty as well.

Babe I’m Scared, Pick Me Up?
At level 10, you’re finally emotionally mature enough to admit when you need help. Sometimes, anyway. Once a week, you can get your spouse to come and help out with something, whether that be helping in a fight, getting you out of a bad situation, or you just missing them a lot.
